How to Expedite Airport Security with TSA PreCheck and Global Entry
Pent-up demand for travel had created a much-publisized backlog of passport applications as well as long approval wait times for programs such as TSA PreCheck and Global Entry that are designed to expedite the airport security process.
What is TSA PreCheck?
TSA PreCheck is an expedited security screening program that allows eligible travelers to keep their shoes on, liquids and laptops in their bags, and light jackets on through security. Passengers approved for TSA PreCheck will see a "TSA Pre✓" symbol on their boarding pass.
What is Global Entry?
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States from an international trip. Global Entry members receive all the benefits of TSA PreCheck, plus they can use Global Entry kiosks to enter the United States and avoid the traditional immigration lines.
How to apply for TSA Pre-Check and Global Entry
To apply for TSA Pre-Check or Global Entry, you must first create an account on the their website. Once you have created an account, you can complete the online application and pay the required fee. Next you'll need to schedule an interview to receive final approval.

TSA PreCheck costs $85 for five years
Global Entry costs $100 for five years
TSA PreCheck is usually a better option if you travel domestically and Global Entry for those who travel internationally. Keep in mind that if you get Global Entry, you also get TSA PreCheck.
Once you have been approved for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you will receive a Known Traveler Number (KTN). You must add your KTN to your flight reservation in order to use the expedited security lanes.
How to expedite the interview process for Global Entry
Once you've submitted your application and get conditional approval for Global Entry, you'll need to schedule an interview for final approval. Interviews take place in a variety of airports around the country. This is where many applicants get frustrated because it is not unusual to wait several months to get an appointment.
I recently helped a client with the application process for Global Entry and was stunned to discover that there were no internview appointments available for at least three months in her area. After doing research, I found a company called Appointment Scanner.
Appointment Scanner monitors the Trusted Traveler Programs (Global Entry) website for open interview slots and sends you an alert when a slot becomes available at your chosen enrollment center. This can save you hours of time and frustration trying to schedule an appointment on your own.
For us, this worked amazingly well. It did take a couple of weeks, but we snagged an appointment at the airport that was most convenient (and several months sooner than using the traditional method of scheduling).
How to use Appointment Scanner
To use Appointment Scanner, simply create an account and select the enrollment center where you would like to schedule your interview. Appointment Scanner will then monitor the website for open slots and send you an alert when a slot becomes available.
Once you have received an alert, you can log in to your Appointment Scanner account and book your appointment. Appointment Scanner charges a one-time fee of $29 for their service.
